How much to charge for lawn mowing
Measure mowable grass, not the entire parcel. A house, driveway, patio, planting bed, and wooded corner can occupy a large part of a lot. Subtract those areas before entering square feet or acres. The unit selector converts acres to square feet using a fixed conversion, while deck width and working speed estimate how much turf the mower covers in a minute. The efficiency allowance accounts for turning and overlap in a simplified way; it is not a manufacturer performance promise.
Start with a deck that can actually reach the backyard. A wide mower that cannot pass the gate should not set the price for a job you will complete with a smaller machine. Tight corners, slopes, roots, and parked equipment can reduce productive time. Lower the efficiency input when those conditions require more turns or slower passes. If your own timing record disagrees with the estimate, use the timing record to revise the assumptions.
Add trimming and edging as minutes, then include the drive time you want this visit to cover. A lawn beside an existing stop can support different travel economics from a single isolated property. Use the labor cost calculator to set a rate that includes paid non-mowing time. Record the mower, access limits, and expected finish in the quote so the price refers to a clear service.
| Mowable area | Calculated visit |
|---|---|
| 2,500 sq ft | $46.34 |
| 5,000 sq ft | $57.68 |
| 10,000 sq ft | $80.35 |
| 21,780 sq ft | $133.78 |
| 43,560 sq ft | $232.55 |
Lawn care pricing chart
The lawn care pricing chart holds the starting mower settings, trimming time, travel time, and hourly rate constant while increasing turf area. Each amount is calculated, including the minimum visit charge. That minimum explains why very small lawns may have the same quoted total: loading, driving, and unloading still happen. These examples are scenarios for planning a route, not published prices for a city or neighborhood.
Change the deck width to compare equipment only when the access and finish requirements allow that machine. A wider deck increases theoretical coverage, but the efficiency percentage still matters. Doubling deck width will not necessarily halve the entire visit because trimming and driving stay in the job. The result shows estimated mowing minutes separately, helping you spot a calculation that seems too fast for the property you inspected.
Do not hide additional work inside a mowing chart. Leaf removal, bagging and hauling clippings, hedge cutting, and neglected growth should have their own scope and time allowance. For a customer also requesting exterior cleaning, use the pressure washing price calculator for the concrete and keep that amount separate. Small fence repairs can be checked against the handyman price list. A clear list of services lets the customer choose the work without turning a simple mow into an open-ended visit.
How to price lawn care jobs
Frequency affects the plan you make for a property. A regular schedule can help you group nearby stops and keep the expected condition more consistent, but the calculator leaves the discount under your control. Enter a discount only after checking the time you expect to save. The minimum visit remains the floor after that discount, so a small recurring lawn does not fall below the amount you need to make the trip worthwhile.
Write down what happens when weather delays a visit or growth exceeds the normal scope. You can quote a separate catch-up service after seeing the condition instead of assuming the routine price covers any length of grass. Confirm access to gates and the customer’s arrangements for pets or movable obstacles. Those details help you distinguish a scheduling problem from an underpriced mowing job when reviewing the week.
For a crew, use a crew selling rate if the entered minutes represent elapsed visit time. Do not use one worker’s hourly cost against the combined work of several paid people. The markup and margin calculator helps check profit once you have the cost basis right. Review the quoting workflow and Driveway Desk pricing when you want to keep recurring scope and customer records together. Compare estimated minutes against completed stops before replacing your current rate across the whole route.
How we calculate this
Mowing minutes = mowable square feet ÷ (deck inches / 12 × feet per minute × efficiency / 100). Acres × 43,560 gives square feet. Price = max(minimum visit, (mowing + trimming + drive minutes) / 60 × hourly rate × (1 − discount / 100)).

Lawn mowing price calculator questions
Should I enter the lot size or the grass area?
Enter the grass you will actually mow. Remove the footprint of buildings, driveways, beds, and other excluded areas from the parcel measurement. For a mixed property, estimate separate grass sections and add them together. The calculator converts your chosen area unit, but it cannot subtract obstacles it has not been told about.
How does mower deck width change the mowing estimate?
Deck width sets the theoretical width of each pass. The formula combines that width with working speed and the efficiency percentage to estimate minutes. Travel and trimming remain separate, so a wider deck does not reduce the whole visit in the same proportion. Use the machine that can reach the work area.
Does the lawn quote include trimming and edging?
It includes the number of trim and edge minutes you enter, priced at the same hourly rate as the rest of the visit. Change that allowance to match the property. If bagging, hedge work, or hauling is outside the mowing scope, describe and price those tasks separately before the customer approves the estimate.
How should I price a weekly mowing visit?
Estimate the minutes for the expected routine condition, include the travel allocation, and then enter a discount only if your schedule or workload supports one. The minimum visit remains the floor. Price an unusually overgrown first service separately instead of assuming a recurring percentage adjustment covers every possible condition.
Can I use acres instead of square feet for mowing?
Yes. Choose acres and enter the mowable acreage as a decimal. One acre converts to 43,560 square feet in the formula. Changing units does not automatically reinterpret an old measurement, so check the area value when switching. A quarter acre should be entered as 0.25 with acres selected.
Why do two small lawns show the same visit price?
The calculated time charges can both fall below your minimum visit. In that case the calculator returns the minimum for each property rather than an amount too small to cover the trip. The mowing minutes can still differ. Review the time breakdown before changing the floor just to make the totals different.
